Respect: Consent, Boundaries, and Being in Charge of You Rachel Brian

Growing up I had found myself in situations where I felt guilt-tripped by people, gave in to peer pressure and said 'Yes' when I really wanted to say 'No". As adults, I'm sure we still find ourselves in such situations, so I feel learning about boundaries and consent is ever so important, especially from young. Teaching kids about boundaries and consent help them build self-respect, learn to respect others and grow healthy relationships.

You might remember the author, Rachel Brian of The Worry (Less) Book, which is great for helping kids manage their worries. When I found her other book - Respect: Consent, Boundaries, and Being in Charge of You - I knew it would be another gem.

This book breaks down what boundaries and consent mean in kid-friendly ways. It covers things like bodily autonomy (having a say over your own body), understanding that everyone’s boundaries are different, and giving and getting consent.

It’s filled with practical advice too, like how to practice expressing your feelings, ways to nurture healthy friendships, and what to do if you see someone in a tough situation. Brian’s funny doodle-style illustrations also keep the tone light while tackling serious topics.

I think this is one book every child should read and I’d highly recommend it for kids 8 and up, though parents can definitely read it with younger ones too. Boundaries and consent are lessons everyone benefits from, no matter the age, so this is a book teens and grown-ups can take something from as well.
