READ & REVIEWED: 甲骨文学校 by Huang Jia Jia + Giveaway

In this middle grade fantasy series, three children travel back in time to different Chinese dynasties, where they embark on exciting adventures, solve mysteries and form unexpected friendships.

When 11-year-old You You and his father come across an ancient oracle bone and a magical tent, You You, his classmate Tian Tian, and his little sister Xiao Bu Ding are whisked back over 3,000 years into China’s Shang dynasty. As they try to unravel the mystery behind the bone’s inscriptions, they encounter mythical creatures, stumble into palace conspiracies, and form unexpected friendships along the way.

甲骨文学校 (Oracle Bone School) is the first in a series by Huang Jia Jia, a former journalist and history enthusiast. The first book started a little slow for me, with the kids bumping into seemingly random creatures and events, but once the mystery began to unfold, everything clicked into place. I found myself racing through the pages, hoping they’d survive the dangers and make it safely back home.

I haven’t gotten to the rest of the books yet, but I’m definitely hooked. It was fun seeing the kids use modern gadgets and quick thinking to tackle ancient challenges. I’m excited to see where the kids end up next, what other dynasties they’ll explore and what wild adventures are waiting for them.

Thank you @shiawasebooks for recommending this fun and exciting fantasy series! There are now 8 books in this series and each book can be read as a standalone. While the series is considered middle grade in China, I reckon it might be a bit challenging for primary schoolers here and probably better suited for our secondary school students. That said, it also makes for good bonding time for parents to read with their upper primary school kids 😊 Shiawase Books' lady boss @eeling.ink says this is also pretty popular with adults too!
