Immortal Sue Lynn Tan romantasy book review

When Liyen - heir to Tianxia, a kingdom serving the immortals - is poisoned, her grandfather steals an enchanted lotus meant for the immortal queen to save her life. Furious at his betrayal, the queen orders the God of War, Zhangwei, to attack Tianxia, which leads to Liyen's grandfather’s death. Thrust onto a precarious throne, Liyen vows to free her mortal kingdom as she forms a fragile alliance with the immortals when dark forces loom. Liyen must protect her people while wrestling the tension between duty and growing feelings for her adversary.

Immortal Sue Lynn Tan romantasy book review

Immortal is a standalone romantic fantasy set in the same world as Daughter of the Moon Goddess. I absolutely love the Celestial Kingdom world Tan has created, and it was such a treat to dive back into it. Though the story genre is romantasy, it drew me in not just with its enemies-to-lovers trope, but with its rich worldbuilding, political intrigue and the twists and turns I never saw coming.

Immortal Sue Lynn Tan romantasy book review

Liyen’s journey was one of my favourite parts, where she grows from a stubborn, hesitant ruler into a courageous, determined leader. I wasn’t initially a fan of the cold and aloof Zhangwei who seems to have a hidden agenda, but as the story unfold, you begin to understand why he is who he is, and I found myself rooting for him and Liyen to overcome the odds together. This book took me on an emotional roller coaster where I definitely shed a tear or two.
