A hilarious series about five hungry stray dogs' quests for food, plus simply adorable stick dog illustrations.
UPDATED - 30 December 2019 (original post 22 October 2019)
Chanced upon a Stick Dog book recently at Bras Basah Complex and bought it for my nine-year-old. And what a gem it was! She found it very amusing and finished reading it over a day or two (the kids are so in a 'I want a pet dog' phase now!).
The middle grade Stick Dog series by Tom Watson is about five stray dogs - their leader being Stick Dog (so named as he is drawn as a stick figure, as are the rest of the dogs) - and their constant search for food. Their quests and ruses, along with the dogs' train of thoughts, are funny, clever and sometimes downright ridiculous. We had a number of LOL moments reading these together as we cheered for the sensible and kind Stick Dog and rolled eyes at his erm less intelligent compatriots' plans.
Advance readers will be able to zip through these quickly but doesn't mean they are any less fun to read! To date, there are nine Stick Dog books - the latest being Stick Dog Gets the Tacos - and we've finished eight out of the nine books. We'd enjoyed every single one of them, our favourites being Stick Dog Tries to Take the Donuts and Stick Dog Crashes a Party.
It'll be hard to wait for the next book of the series (as with all good series!) but we've found another series by the author to amuse us with - the Stick Cat series! More on that later!
