The fun hawker food rhymes and beautiful illustrations in the uniquely Singaporean Sing a Song of Hawker Food will delight kids and adults!
Sorry Humpty, we had eggs for breakfast 😆 In Sing A Song of Hawker Food: Humpty Dumpty & Friends Have a Hawker Feast, the nursery rhyme character quite understandably declines soft-boiled eggs and has butter and kaya toast instead!
The funny rhyme sang to Humpty Dumpty is one of the 14 hawker food rhymes in the book written by Lianne Ong and Janice khoo and illustrated by Chao which you can sing or read to familiar rhymes. I was absolutely tickled by This Little Piggy who went to da bao food and the Three Blind Mice who ate chicken rice 😆
I also like that it has fun facts about Singapore hawker food e.g. the origins of Roti John and common phrases used when ordering hawker food and drinks like bungkus in Malay for takeaway and siew dai for less sugar in your drink. Its bonus features, which you can access with the SnapLearn app, has the book creators singing and playing instruments to the rhymes! Very cool indeed!
Paired with humorous and beautiful illustrations, the book is delightful, uniquely Singaporean and a fun introduction of our local fare to children (and even adults)! The book is available from World Scientific and its Lazada shop.
A word of warning: you may experience serious hawker food cravings after reading this, like how I really need an ice kachang after Mary Had a Little Dessert! 😁
