Sharing about the Emmie & Friends graphic novel series by Terri Libenson as many friends were asking about it when I posted about it on IGS 😊
The middle-grade series starts off with Invisible Emmie, a story about Emmie, a shy and artistic 13-year-old, who feels that she is invisible in school. She's a stark contrast to popular, confident and outgoing Katie, whom Tyler - Emmie's crush - seems to be interested in. When a note Emmie wrote about her crush falls into the wrong hands, she becomes not so invisible anymore - but for all the wrong reasons.
Emmie's story is full of heart and tender moments. I found it very relatable as I, too, was a shy and quiet kid who had at times felt invisible. Even as an adult, I still feel that way at different points in my life. So this is one the quiet kids would really get. The book's illustrations are humorous and spot-on, and my 10 and 12-year olds had many LOL moments when reading it. See illustrations below! You'll also notice the graphic novel is not in standard comic format but I guess is classified as so due to the many illustrations? BTW there is also a twist at the end of the story that I didn't see coming and really liked 😉
I haven't read the rest of the series but I spy from their blurbs much middle school drama centred on friendship, cliques, bullying, and crushes - themes tweens and teenages would find relatable. I reckon this series is suitable for those 9 years old and up, though the older kids would probably be able to appreciate the nuances of the stories a bit more.
We bought the first 4 books of the series from Times Bookstore and hope to get our hands on two newer books of the series soon 😊 Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend!
